A digital marketing plan does not need to be a long document. For most small businesses, a single page that answers a few key questions is more useful than a complex strategy nobody reads.
Step 1: Define one clear goal
Pick the outcome that matters most over the next three months — for example more enquiries from your website, more calls from local customers, or more online orders. Everything else in the plan should support that goal.
Step 2: Know who you are trying to reach
Describe your ideal customer in a few sentences: what they need, where they look for solutions and what might stop them from choosing you.
Step 3: Choose two or three channels
Rather than trying everything, pick the channels that match how your customers search. A local trade business may focus on Google Business Profile and local SEO; an online shop may focus on product page SEO and social media.
Step 4: Set a realistic routine
- Weekly: respond to reviews and messages, post on social media
- Monthly: publish or update one piece of website content
- Quarterly: review what is working and adjust the plan
Step 5: Measure what matters
Use free tools such as Google Search Console and Google Analytics to track progress towards your goal. Focus on enquiries and sales rather than vanity metrics.
